I love antiques! When a girl friend offered to sell me a Victrola that had belonged to her Grandmother, I jumped at
the chance.  When she played me one of the old, thick albums, I knew I had to restore it,
western style of course!
This is how I revived this beautiful piece.
First the doors and hardware were removed, along with the actual ball bearing motor, turntable and megaphone. Then the veneer
was peeled from the sides and door fronts and the rest of the cabinet was stripped, sanded and wiped down.
Next, the cabinet trim and sections that were not to be covered were stained and varnished. I then cut paper patterns for the cabinet
sides, doors and lid top. On the wrong side of a hide, I marked out my patterns  and carefully cut out each piece. I used a gel
formulated contact cement to glue the hide to the wood. For the finishing touches, I used decorative furniture nails around all of the
covered edges and attached antique pulls to all four doors. Finally, the Victrola was put back together.
Tools for the project:
paint/varnish remover, sand
paper, paint brushes, heavy
duty scissors, ruler, pencil, roll
of brown shipping paper for
patterns, hammer,
screwdrivers, stain and varnish.
It does not have to be a grand  piece of  wood furniture or covered with cow hide to be western. All you need is a little
imagination to transform an everyday item into you own personal trophy. Cover an old beat up trunk or transfer a
dresser into a buffet. Recreate a mirror by covering the frame. Consider faux leather as an alternative to cow hide as
well as tin, which can be painted or punched. Heavy woven fabrics such as tapestry can also be used for a dramatic
look. What ever you decide to refinish, have a great time rediscovering your own personal western style!
